virtual support for macbook

Anonymous
My macbook is only 4 years old but is running slow, the fan runs continuously even when in sleep mode, and in general is not doing well. I don't have a ton of things on it and have run software to free up memory and look for viruses but no change. Any recommendations for a virtual service to help figure out what's going on? Or if I book an appt at the genius bar can they likely solve it without having to send my computer off? I'm not in DC but am in a major metro area if there's another brick and mortar chain your recommend

At 4 years it's due to be replaced.

How much longer do you expect it to last?

Ignore previous poster. They're clueless. You might consider backing it up and doing a factory reset.

Open it up and clean it out. The fans pull in a lot of dust and that will cause the fan to work overtime, heat to build up and things will generally slow down.

Agreed that four years is likely the expected life of a laptop. Especially since the post-2020 Apple machines have ARM processors, which run much cooler and have significant performance benefits.

That said, it might just need cleaning. Take the bottom cover off (which might require a special "pentalobe" screwdriver--many Apple products do, unfortunately) and attack it with a can of compressed air.

As noted above, a full backup and re-installation of the operating system and software will likely help as well.

None of this costs anything except time and maybe one of those special screwdrivers and a can of air. No need to pay for support.

Apple can fix most things remotely
