My teen has begun using Snapchat. He knows as part of his agreement to have a cell phone, we can monitor content at any time.
I am admittedly clueless about Snapchat. How do you see prior conversations? |
By the time I allowed SnapChat I wasn't monitoring anymore. At that stage my kids had developed their own moral code for online use and applied it as they saw fit. At a certain point you either trust your kids or don't. |
Nope. You can only see a chat if they've saved it. And they don't usually save it, because they know you're going to be looking. |
I hate Snapchat. Wish I had never allowed it but most kids have it |
You can monitor who they are connected with and what their settings are but that is it.
Just look up Snapchat in Common Sense Media. |
You can if you have the Snapchat Family Center feature set up on both yours and your kids phone. |
I don't think Family Center allows you to see the actual chats. You can see who your child has chatted with, but not the content of the chats. |
You can't. That's the whole point of Snapchat. . |
Note that it “escapes” screen time settings. If you think your kid’s phone locks down at 8pm or after 20 minutes, or whatever, Snapchat overrides those settings. |
Snapchat is super useful for teens to share child porn and find illicit drug dealers / buy alcohol underage. Also good for bullying. |
You can have them change the settings to saving for 24 hours, then at least you can read recent chats if you have to look for any reason |
SnapChat is designed to hide activity from parents and police (although, in cases of murder/terrorism, police can see through SnapChat).
What do teens what to hide? |
“want” not “what.” |
Teens hide inappropriate pictures, texts, foul language, "dating", nudes, etc. |
