Shohei Ohtani

How did the interpreter steal that much money without Shohei catching on earlier?

He’s in on it.

He’s the fall guy. He wasn’t just the interpreter, they were best friends.

The memes are hilarious but I believe Shohei

I think the original story the interpreter (Ippei) told is the true one - that Ohtani knew about and paid his debt to the bookie. The story only changed when Ohtani talked to lawyer who must have told him that he could have criminal liability for sending the illegal bookie money, even if he wasn't gambling.

ESPN reports that there's no evidence that Ohtani has reported the claimed "theft" of his money to the authorities.

I believe this, too. I don't think that Shohei was betting. I read somewhere that his baseball acquaintances said he showed absolutely no interest in other sports.

This is what I believe as well.

Does the MLB have their own translators on staff at all? If not, they should, IMO. You can't bring your own translator to court (at least in my district) and must use one of the independent translators at the courthouse. They are not employed by the district and are considered an independent 3rd party.

How would they know, they can’t understand him.

He's kind of shady. I know he goes out of his way to seem like the nicest guy in the world, but something is off for me.

+1. I'm not sure if I'm buying the interpreter's story, how did he get in that much debt with bookies? Usually you aren't getting past a certain point before those they're sending someone to visit you. They aren't idiots, they know generally how much money someone may have to come up with an pay off debts.

Good article on the bookmaker in question:

It really does sound like the interpreter was a degenerate gambler.

There are several blind out items over the past year about his “escapades“ with women on all his baseball stops.

Oh, he speaks English well enough. He's been in the US since 2018. He keeps the interpreter because it's his best friend (oops!) and for public speaking/interviews.

I mean, that's every major star athlete over the past 50 years. Magic, Wilt, Kobe, Jordan....why not Ohtani, too? The guy can live it up.
