Why is Northeastern (NEU) so popular with both parents and students these days?

DC making a decision soon but I'm puzzled how this school seemed to come out of nowhere onto the top of most student lists here (one of the W schools). I get that their acceptance rate has dropped to 1 to 2% and that can drive a fomo feeding frenzy but what also is causing this?

Marketing. They have spent million of dollars on marketing campaigns.

Because Boston is great and kids are less interested in slacs now.

One reason that they get so many applications is that it’s a very easy to apply to school with a simple check mark on the common app. Most better schools require additional essays.

Couldn’t be the co-op program and experiential learning leading to jobs could it?

Or the hundreds of millions it’s pumped into dorms and research centers.

Nah it can only be the marketing and gaming the system. DCUM is stuck in the 90s. 🙄

All marketing. It's a commuter school at heart and not the same as other T50-60s based on quality of faculty and grad job/professional school outcomes.

Co-op is increasingly popular idea and they are pros at it. All schools upping internships, etc.

Easy app, lots of hype, huge marketing budget — but kids seem to really like going there (Oakland campus aside!) so NEU must be doing something right.

DC visited the main colleges in Boston area for spring break. FWIW, liked NEU the best. Didn't like NEU's pushing of other campuses like Oakland or London. Wants Boston campus. Will apply.

Frankly, I don't know anyone that applied there this year from my kid's private. It fell out of favor very quickly.

Easy App. Gamed the system and people have been easily duped. It’s working, they’re getting the applications and ED at that.

This, plus it's in Boston.

I don't mind the marketing gimmicks so long as the quality of education and employment outcomes justify it. From what I can tell (from speaking to current students and recent grads), they do.

No dog in this fight; my son did not want an urban campus and did not apply.

Too hard to get into the better Boston colleges.

Same. There is an antagonistic poster (and those like them, for those using VPNs) who regularly posts about this school, clearly intending for the post to turn negative, clearly having ill intent.

OP, if you are genuinely interested in this school, and not yet another troll poster, on the same subject (you can easily look up multiple past posts) - then you can easily research the school, and it's stats, and what it has to offer your child. Otherwise, I don't see coming to an anonymous board in order to successfully reap factual information about any college.

NEU is a great fit for the right student, and applicants seem to well know the school's strong points. Those who try to disparage any school clearly have a chip on their shoulder. Lastly, be wary of those who only have Googled information, and who claim to have visited, but give bad information - because those posts are both plentiful.

Good luck in your "college search".
