Fruit trees in front yard?

Anonymous
We don't have an HOA. Does Montgomery County have rules against having a fruit tree in the front yard?
Anonymous
No.
Plenty of my neighbors have fruit trees in their front yards: cherry, apple, peach/nectarine, persimmon, pomegranates, figs, pawpaws. Plant away!

Why would a county have a rule against fruit trees in a front yard?

It is your right to plant food!

Depending on your neighborhood, don't be surprised if strangers pick your fruit though.

That’s ballsy. Lots of people in my Silver Spring neighborhood grow food and fruit plants in front yards and I’ve never had any issues with people behaving strangely. One time I did notice a small group of women pointing and exclaiming animatedly at some hot peppers I had planted and I told them they were welcome to take whatever they wanted.

I tell people to come pick cherries from our tree. Love having a cherry tree in the front.

Shocked and not shocked at the same time. Did your neighbor report that rando thief or did they ever get her to stop? If they were able to stop her, how were they able to do it?

Although the county may not have rules against it, certain HOAs do prohibit it. It's a good thing you do not have an HOA.

It may depend on where she comes from. Our neighbors welcome people to pick fruit from trees in the front. They don't need to ask. Maybe she came from an area where this was commonplace.

Yes, they reported them but nothing happened so now we have a sign on their front yard saying that they’re under surveillance L O L.

Oh, the lady totally knew what she was doing was wrong, even if where she comes from it was common place because she had her husband or son, and the “getaway car” as she ran to her car and sped off!

County and the state laws can over ride HOAs. Almost all of Maryland’s 23 counties have a weed ordinance, which requires homeowners to keep vegetation shorter than 12 inches. But in 2021, the legislature passed a law preventing HOAs from enforcing the ordinance on homeowners growing native plants or pollinator gardens.
