Just found out I am pregnant with my first! OBGYN recommendations in NoVA or DC?

Just found out I am pregnant with my first today! I am VERY early on (haven’t even told my husband - planning a surprise that involves his favorite soccer team hehe) but wanted to get recommendations for an OBGYN in the NoVA or DC area. My husband and I live in Old Town but wouldn’t mind driving to DC or other parts of NoVA for a good doctor. My PCP told me to ask my friends with kids but we’re the first in our group and we don’t have family in the area we can ask. My mom is an antenatal nurse in New York and I considered getting an OBGYN at her hospital and flying in for appointments but it doesn’t seem realistic.

I appreciate and recommendations you all can provide. Thank you!!!

I’d choose the hospital you want to deliver at first. I live in Old Town and delivered two at VHC with Northern Virginia Physicians to Women. (For one pregnancy, I also saw the MFM practice at VHC.) Wonderful experience both times.

I’m a few miles south of you in Alexandria and chose Inova Fairfax. They have the highest NICU level in NOVA, which was important to me. In case of a preemie, I didn’t want to be separated from my baby. For prenatal care, I loved the drs at Inova OBGYN Annandale. Their office is right next door to Inova Fairfax.

INOVA Fairfax is the best. I unfortunately had to use the NICU.

I really liked VHC and also see Northern Virginia Physicians to Women. I found that they were super efficient with their appointments (a pro when you're going in a lot), but not really hand-holders (which was a con for my first, but I'd probably appreciate with a second).

I go to Physicians and Midwives, which is very convenient from Old Town. That said, I don’t love them. My first pregnancy was complicated, and I feel like they could have been more supportive. Thought about switching for my second pregnancy, but couldn’t find another practice as convenient. My second pregnancy was more typical and they were fine for that.

There are so many good options in VA that I wouldn't even consider anyone in DC unless you are really struggling to find someone you like.

Honestly just go with a practice at whatever hospital is close to you.

If anything seriously complicated comes up, then you can spend more time finding an MFM. But for routine stuff convenience is the most important part.

Do you not have a GYN that you go to regularly? (I know some women do and some women just get paps at their PCP).

MFM at Johns Hopkins is terrific. Christopher Novak, MD is the best.

Kristiaan Nevin in Georgetown.

You need someone convenient because you will be going to a lot of appointments (NY would be ridiculous).

The GW Team is amazing. I'm 38 weeks now and have been seeing Dr. Celeste Jilich, Ariana Munger, and Paula LaTortue-Albino. Super communicative, very attentive, and very respectful of me too. They provide very personalized care and make me feel heard.

I second this. I just had my first and was closer to another hospital, but drove a bit further for Inova Fairfax for the NICU just in case. Unfortunately, I ended up having complications during delivery and cannot say enough good things about the hospital. The Annandale OBGYN office is also amazing. I saw all three doctors and all three are fabulous. Same with the midwives there.
