Parents of Swimmers

This is a painful read but parents of swimmers should read it. Don’t teach your kids to put coaches on a pedestal and don’t do it yourselves.

Dear God.

Is this why MD no longer has a swim program?

This is UMBC- not UMD. UMD canceled their program in 2012. UMBC still has a swim team.

UMBC has a long history of being a swimming powerhouse with a hugely successful club.

They did until this. It is a horrible story, so many victims. The former head coach (who committed suicide) was an awful person. The college team is rebuilding, not nearly as good, The club team is just awful now.

How is this stuff still going on? It is just mind blowing that adults don't think they are a responsibility to do something. Same thing with the hazing at UMD. How is that still going on?

Parents get to a point where they revere coaches and teach their kids to do the same because coaches have power. Then things get overlooked or shoved under the rug.

It's horrible.

Maybe we parents can discuss how/what to teach kids to deal with these kind of situation? All I can think of is to let the kids know that they always have the option to walk away. Nothing is worthy of them sacrificing themselves.
