Protection for Girls Hands

Anonymous
DD started playing lacrosse in high school. She is playing defense. She was hit on her hand by a stick and ended up with a bruise and blood blister. Do girls ever wear gloves with light padding to protect their hands?

DD plays another sport that requires her hands so we are interested in protecting them if possible.

You may be able to find gloves with very light padding, but doubtful you will find something that will prevent injuries the way players use their sticks. Our high school team had three players break thumbs in the past several years because of others wildly swinging their sticks on checks. Gloves would not have presented this. Better officiating and removing players from games who consistently display this behavior would.

Mens gloves would prevent it, but she would be the only one wearing them

OP here. thank you for the replies. I did find a couple pair of women’s lacrosse gloves that look lightly padded. I may pick them up and see what my daughter thinks. would you suggest she wear them on both hands or just one?

Also look atmountain bike gloves. They have thicker padding than typical girls lax gloves. Avoid the ones with hard plastic covers.

Back in PA some girls wear a field hockey glove. Seen a few with them on both hands. Not common but they do the job.

Both. Having had two daughters play who both broke bones doing so, it can be hard to avoid minor injuries like bruising. Making sure the refs crack down on wild checking will have the biggest impact on preventing serious injuries. Unintentional contact will happen though. The women’s game is only getting more physical.

Hopefully your DD is more willing to gear up than mine. Lots of peer pressure on looks and gloves are not the norm. Banged up fingers certainly are.

For defenders, a lot of the hand hits seem to come on follow throughs from shots.
Attacker's stick slides down the defender's as they finish the shot. I've seen coaches recommend defenders ball their grip into fists when challenging a shot to provide a little more protection, instead of leaving a thumb out there. Hard to do in mid-game, especially when reaching, but thought I would pass along.

Are you suggesting women belong in the kitchen and not on the lacrosse field?

No I’m saying with the new improved goose down oven mitts your hands will be firmly protected against the unruly girl swinging sticks.

I was having beers with a few lax dads tonight and this came up. Sadly, look at the hardcore 2022 and 2023 lax girls and they are messes. Not going to model any of them.

Fingers are all sorts of f’ed up. Hands like construction workers. Feet and toes like ballerinas. Knees like someone hit them with a belt sander. 😳

Get field hockey gloves, mechanix gloves, something to add a layer. Who gives a crap how it looks.
