Trans health care for young adult in DMV

Anonymous
Looking for a health care system for gender questioning young person (will be 18 in July) that can provide access to support groups and a group of doctors, including a psychiatrist with this specialty. Would prefer a more conservative/cautious approach to help them understand their dysphoria, receive support, and investigate options. I say that as opposed to a place that would recommend hormones right out of the gate. (Hormones may be the eventual route, we all just want to proceed with caution.) Our kid has been in therapy for a few years and now requested to talk to more medical professionals with a gender specialty.

We're moving to DC or MD this summer from a top 3 metro. The children's hospital here has a gender clinic that serves up to age 24, and I am wondering if there is something similar in/around DC. We have not started care here due to the fact that we're moving.

Thank you in advance for any information.

Whitman Walker Health without question. They will at the very minimum get you started. This is an easy one.

Thank you so much. Getting started is what we're looking for. Truly appreciate it.

Children’s National also has a gender clinic as well.

Children's national goes to 17 and has a long wait list. We aged out before we got seen.

You should recognize that once your kid is 18 there is no “we.” That is not to say that you can’t have a say if your kid lets you, but they will be an adult. I’m a supportive mom to a trans 18 year old and as soon as she turned 18, all the communication goes to her (or would if she would check her emails). Personally, I would not go with pediatrics if my kid was almost 18 because there are fewer providers that take a lot longer to be seen. My child’s doctor actually suggested she go to an adult provider and we are waiting to see them..couldn’t get appointment until July.

A college friend of mine is a Pediatric Endocrinologist at Chase Brexton Healthcare near Baltimore and she does gender affirming care.

Does anyone know such a doctor in Atlanta. Nephew is questioning their gender identity and is on the spectrum. It would be great for them to have someone to talk to.

It would probably be best if they (and their parents) looked for someone locally.

Sorry but DMV practitioners, in the main, are not conservative/cautious. Not at all.
