My high school son is telling me he is interested in playing lacrosse. He has zero experience in the sport but is a decent tennis player (at a school with a great lacrosse team). Is it too late for him to start playing? |
It is if the school has a great lacrosse team. There are only about five of those in the DMV if it is a normal team then they can play maybe not start but make the team. |
No, not too late. Being a kid is a time to try things. Short answer is no, have him try it. The longer answer is that he should be realistic about the level that he's going to play at. With the school having a great team, his chances of making varsity are close to zero, unless he's the reincarnation of the Hermes, the Greek god of speed, and even then the coaches will have to be up to taking a flyer that he'll be able to add decent stick work quickly. Even JV will be very tough, but he has absolutely nothing to lose by trying and will probably gain some respect from his peers for the attempt, as long as he's willing to ignore the a-holes. If this is a troll post luring us into a discussion about just how late someone can start lacrosse, you got me!!!! |
No, not too late! My DS played lacrosse for the very first time in 12th grade and had a great experience. |
No chance a great lacrosse school would reach out. Maybe a couple of his buds did. If your kid wants to get completely embarrassed by really skilled kids whacking him with a metal stick, go for it.
Troll post |
I agree this is a troll post. A parent with a players just starting in 11th grade at a "great" program would not be here. Also the tennis reference as if someone the two sports relate is funny. As if they think a lacrosse stick is a tennis racket or similar. |
Can't believe I fell for it... |
Not a troll post.. Thank you for your response. |
My nephew played his senior year for the first time. He really enjoyed it, and even scored a goal before the season was over. Go for it! |
Yay. Great for him. What school did he play for? |
My kid started in 10th and for 11th will be in varsity. Depends on the kid, position and prior athletic experience
I say go for it and give it a try if interested! |
No reason not to give it a try. Even the best NOVA public schools have a place on their JV for an athletic kid who is a hard worker. I’ve seen lots of soccer kids successfully transition to lax. |
I would guess at this point though all tryouts are completed |
even with crazy athleticism its tough to have the stick skills that would measure up to kids who have been playing for 8+ years. |
