Waitlisted at Virginia Tech πŸ˜‘ . Question.

Does the major applied to make a difference in whether child is waitlisted or not? Child applied for Industrial Design, has pretty good stats (not ivy league good but good), we are from Virginia, but he was still waitlisted.

I don’t know if major makes a difference, but thousands of people were waitlisted. And many of them have excellent stats.

My DS was waitlisted last year. From what I understand, no one on the waitlist was ever offered admission for fall 2023.

DS just put in a transfer application for Virginia Tech - fingers crossed!

Yes it matters. Engineering? No chance of getting off the waitlist. A less popular major slight chance.

DD got off the waitlist the week before decisions were due in 2021.

At most schools it matters. Never ever put the most competitive major unless you have to for admission to a specific program

Yes major matters. VT only admits by major and, I would assume, they take off the waitlist by major too.

Sounds like this is a new decision so they applied Regular Decision? If their stats are that good, likely would have gotten in EA. When DS applied last year (different major) they were very clear that RD is only for "space available", they don't hold spots for RD.

If you are talking about industrial design in the college of architecture, last year 35 instate students applied and 12 were accepted. Of those 12, 9 enrolled, so a high yield. Like others said no one was taken off the waitlist last year either.

absolutely matters. My kid planned to apply a few years ago and was pre-med/psychology. She was told by our HS college counselor (who was told by VT) to apply for Human Development and she'd be all but guaranteed to get in (she did have great stats too). She didn't end up applying as she got into her ED school but that stood out to me.

Yes, this program. Is there a place I can see these admission stats? Didn't realize this program was so small!

Make sure her HS guidance counselor knows it's her first choice. Where else in VA was she accepted, and what major?

I've heard lots of stories where a FCPS student gets into either JMU or VT, but not both.

From the Virginia Tech website
Numbers for School of Design, not international

2022-23
477 applied
248 accepted
78 enrolled
Offer rate 52%
Yield rate 31.5%

2023-2024
484 applied
229 accepted
68 enrolled
Offer rate 47.3%
Yield Rate 29.7%

---
So I am guessing they aim for around 70 students per year.
