Board of Elections Issues Petitions in Charles Allen Recall

Anonymous
Recall petitions have been issued for the Charles Allen recall. It would be great if we could have an actual discussion about this without trolls getting it shut down again.

I voted for Allen about 10 years ago. In the past two elections, I wrote someone in. I am feeling desperate for our elected representatives to take crime in DC seriously. I do not feel like Allen has the inclination or the credibility to move the needle on crime (and I think several of his policies have made crime a lot worse).

Allen takes crime seriously. Blaming him for the falilures of the Mayor and MPD while kowtowing to GOP operatives in this effort is not the solution.

Say the recall is successful. Who are these republicans going to run in the special? Whoever the replacement is will just keep being part of the 13 votes that unanimously pass all these bills these republicans claim are harming the city.

If anyone wants background to educate themselves on this question, here is a discussion of a panel discussion Allen recently held on violent crime in DC:

I wrote someone in too. I’m probably one of the “trolls”. It’s not a “troll” to be shocked by the collateral damage this Council’s legislation has done. I will sign, and everyone I know will. I’m worried that’s too little too late.

I also take an exception to just how dishonest Allen is. In a recent interview, confronted with his own recorded stances, he said “there’s a lot of misinformation out there” or something to that effect. He strikes me as someone in it for his own benefit who will do anything to stay in the job. His disregard for the families is stunning.

This recall is not just about Allen. It’s about repossessing a share of the voice and saying enough.

Is it a bit unfair because Wards 1, 4 and 8 deserve a recall more? Maybe. He has though really made a lot of enemies and detractors in his own party and I can’t see how he has any future politically. That’s why he’s desperate to hold on to this job.

Regardless of Allen, a reform of how we elect the Council and term limits are a must.

I live in the area. Crime is a problem. Allen isn't solely responsible for it - it's systemic issues at the Mayor's office, with MPD, with the AG's office, with lack of home rule, with some sub-cultural mores, the revoked crime lab and losing the faith of prosecutors, with numerous other factors. Allen is just one guy in the mix. Anyway, I like him for a lot of issues. Not signing a petition and (if your petition to recall actually makes it), I'll be voting to retain him.

It’s not “republicans” - the recall is being run by high profile democrats and many of the donors are democrats. I’m OP, and I’m a liberal democrat.

I agree that the big question is who are they going to run. My hope is that they will run a centrist Democrat. We need someone who isn’t going to solely listen to the activists who loudly show up to public safety hearings and DNGAF about day to day quality of life and safety of DC families.

I don’t think there will be chance to vote. The way things are going, Trump will win and has committed to permanently federalizing the city straight away. I think DC will be one of the albatrosses around Biden’s neck.

He refused to say, write or tweet the word crime as in criminal activity from 2029-2023.

Why would GOP run anyone? Democrats can run a normal, moderate, dare I say, native DC person who gets what people are upset about

How does he feel knowing he’s the only recall in the history?

You cannot possibly believe that’s the people’s motivation? This is run by Dems and it’s a massive expenditure of the political capital and time. I think people are pissed at him. Rightly so
