What are the chances of APS cutting TJHSST in the future?

Anonymous
I have a 6th grader and just started looking at options down the road for high schools. Came across this article about APS considering cutting funding for TJHSST. It seems like APS is currently supporting students going to TJHSST but wondering if that support has been solidified or is taking it off the table still in play going forward?

Over the decades there have been treats to pull out. But it never happens because there is too much support for the program here in Arlington. APS also doesn’t offer an equivalent program. Arlington Tech was specifically not designed to be a TJHSST clone.

With all the type A parents living in Arlington, I’m surprised it doesn’t have its own TJ equivalent.

Probably because TJHSST already exists as a regional governor’s school. It serves all of Northern Va except Alexandria City.

+1 Families with school aged children are actually the minority in Arlington. Add that to the fact that there is simply no place to put a new high school, and you can easily see why this will never happen. No political will, no available property.

Always possible. But so is getting redistricted within Arlington. Wouldn’t spend time worrying about it. I assume if they ever stop they will grandfather the kids that are there (but maybe make you do your own transportation)?

And absolutely ridiculous and inexcusable that ACPS keeps this option off the table for Alexandria City students. All so they can maintain their “one high school” fantasy alive.

It could happen, it's come up before. They have also proposed eliminating busing.

Eliminating busing is a terrible idea and would completely go against any equity argument. That proposal would be shut down immediately if equity is a measure. Also how much could it save the county to provide busing for a just a few students?

I don't disagree, but it was proposed before.

In the past, certain sports’ funding, and arts, music, etc., programs were also proposed for cuts, but because of community pushback none of those happened. The planetarium was also saved due to community pushback. Staff always proposes unpopular cuts every few years.

The article posted is three years old. Aren't these threats intended by APS as a way to get more money from the county government? I think they know that ACPS has made itself look foolish by preventing access to TJ, and would not want to follow suit.

How many students are offered seats at TJHSST from APS every year? Thanks
