PE Options

Coming from Virginia where summer PE is an option, just want to make sure I understand: only way to get PE credit in MCPS is in school during the year?

I see some PE classes listed at MC. Is that an option?

Am I missing anything?

Not a problem, just curious if as a newbie I am missing something.

You are correct. Unlike FCPS, MCPS does not allow PE to be taken during the summer ( in person or virtually). Only Health is available to be taken during the summer. PE can be taken anytime during HS- only one credit needed. Many freshmen take PE but I also know many who take it during Junior year.

Another cool option is to take PE senior year. Colleges know you need it for high school graduation, and it gives you one chill class to balance all the extra work that comes with college applications.

There is a class at MC that will count for MCPS PE. You need to take the correct class. Ask your Dual Enrollment Coordinator at the local high school. They will be able to give you information, but really, having a PE class on your schedule when you have a bunch of AP classes is a nice balance.

Welcome to MCPS. Hope you all have a smooth transition.

What HS PE class has your kid taken AND liked or disliked?

Mine took yoga her freshman year, and it was a great break in the middle of the day. Also generally didn’t require changing clothes, if she planned ahead.

I am quite sure there is more than one PE class at MC that provides the Health credit.

At least at our high school some of the single sport PE classes (like soccer) seem to be for kids that play at an advanced level already. From what I gather I’m not sure that more casual players would really love that PE class.

My DS also reports that the class is exclusively boys. The few girls that were in the class first semester dropped it almost immediately.

Mine did the same!

Yoga and weight training. Mine is surprisingly enjoying weight training. It's mostly boys with a few girls. Yoga is mostly girls.

Get it done freshman year. Don't wait till senior year. Get all the requirements done as early as possible and then kids can pick what they enjoy for jr. and sr. years.

It was a big help in the transition to HS.

It's funny but same is true for my kid's PE basketball, except that she's a girl and she didn't drop the class, she stuck it out for the semester. And she's not a newbie, she's on the school JV team. But she was the only girl in that class and the vibe seemed condescending to her.

She's now taking the weight training, it's all girls and lots of fun

+1 At DC's school soccer and basketball are exclusively boys and soccer was full of club and school team players. Basketball had fewer club players but apparently was so unwelcoming to kids who didn't play well that DC's friend left after a few days.

Do they have enough interest to have a class for boys and for girls? That would benefit both groups.

That stinks.
