Going rate for neighborhood babysitter?

Anonymous
My daughter is a high-school student who would like to babysit neighborhood kids. What is the usual going rate? We are in Bethesda. Thanks.

I would pay a high-school sitter $15 with a 3hr min.

$15-20. Last high school student (junior) babysat one child for me last year and charged $15/hr. In Chevy Chase.

15-20. Most parents I know round up to 20/hr though.

I polled a lot of people last year and understood the going rate for a high school sitter to be about $15/hour for one child in the Arlington area (maybe slightly higher for an older high school student with their own transportation). We pay $20/hour for adult, very experienced care providers (people who are career nannies or helpers at daycare). We do normally round up.

Is this the same rate for a mother’s helper? My 14 year old daughter was babysitting a 3 year old and often their baby sibling (with parents in the house) for $10 per hour. Is this typical? Bc she babysits others for a much higher rate.

$10 to be a mothers helper is fair imo. If she has babysat for other people though and feels comfortable she should tell them that she doesn’t do mothers helper gigs anymore but she’s available to babysit at her regular babysitter rate.

We pay an 18yo sitter now a college freshman $20 an hour for one kid. Been with us almost 2 years. Started at $15 an hour. She drives for us which is something we need as DD 11 has activities after school.

Our dd, now 19 and at college, made $15/hour in Bethesda back when she was in MS. It has to have gone up by now

Nothing less than $15 per hour I agree.

And if she is especially great - a tip on top of that.

Good luck > Hoping your daughter finds some families to work for soon! 😃
