One week fly/road trips with educational elements

I can't homeschool due to work/my hot temper but I have been jealous of some benefits to kids from homeschooling. My new job change forces me to take off 5 weeks every year on use it or lose it policy. Kids are DS9 and DD5. Every year, I plan to do 1 week in summer, and 1 week around spring break, 1 week around thanksgiving, and 1 week around christmas to take off to take kids somewhere on road trips or flight trips. We are in dc area, and I want to not only do vacation, but we want to incorporate some interactive and fun educational homeschooling aspects during those trips, eg make it a theme or something. I want to expose them to things other than book knowledge.

DD is interested in art, dance, singing, acting and cute things. DS is a bit gifted, and school has been boring academically to him. He is interested in lot of things. Can you share where we could to go within USA? We are new, and we don't know how to start planning. Our trips used to be targetting amusement park, aquarium, tourist traps, zoo and mainly just eat and kid play.

Go to Atlanta and do a study of civil rights

NYC and study immigration - Statue of Liberty, ellis island, tenement museum etc

Chicago and go to their amazing art museum and see some shows for an arts-focused trip

National parks offer endless opportunities for science exploration. Consider going hard on junior ranger badges.

Try a Florida trip based around marine animals

Really endless opportunities out there...

What about picking 4 or 5 places, finding out a little about them, and then asking your kids to help you research what things they would like to do. Some of their friends are going to cool places, they might have suggestions. With that said my top 3 would be South Florida, Eastern Shore Maryland and a drive-able city like Raleigh, New York or even Richmond Virginia. Oh and definitely look up the state and National Parks. That probably sounds like a bit too much if you're not from here, but there are different parks that are easy flights from DC that your kids would likely really enjoy. Welcome to the US, hope your experience here is fun and enriching.
