weight gain advice, please

Anonymous

I am 17 weeks with my first. I just weighed myself this morning on one of those old-school medical scales - the ones that have the two sliding weights. Apparently these are more reliable/accurate than the digital scales and it is also the same type that they weigh me with at the doctor's office. So, my concern is that I still have not gained any weight. Literally not 1 pound. I am still my pre-pregnancy weight. I've researched it and read that, at this point in pregnancy, the average weight gain is 5-10 pounds, so I'm a bit concerned. I definitely feel like I'm eating enough (every 2 hours) and I'm eating healthfully and I'm working out moderately. So I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Since I don't have another appointment for 2 weeks and won't be able to address this with the doctor until then, I would really appreciate others' thoughts. TIA.

It's totally fine. 17 weeks is still VERY early for weight gain, if any. Many women actually lose weight in the first trimester due to morning sickness, and gradually start to return to pre-pregnancy weight around 16-17 weeks. The weight-gain will come! I'd consider myself lucky! Obviously, just keep eating healthy, don't diet, and relax!

Were you sick your first trimester? Maybe you lost a little and gained it back the past few weeks. Unless you have been weighing yourself regularly on the same scale it's hard to tell. Medical scales are not always accurate either...they need to be calibrated and if you're not using it at a Dr's office then it could definitely be wrong. Are your clothes fitting differently? Were you overweight to begin with? There are a lot of variables that can affect the amount you need to gain. Keep up your healthy habits and talk to your Dr in a few weeks. You'll be fine!

I'm on the other end of things...I'm 17 weeks and I've gained over 10 lbs. Also nerve-wracking.

No, I was not sick during first tri. I am 5 foot 4 and 125 pounds, same as before I was pregnant. I'm not doing anything extreme. Being very diligent about what I eat (making sure it's all healthy, etc) but I certainly indulge every now and then too.

Talk to your doctor or midwife, but unless he or she is worried, I wouldn't worry. I gained 3 pounds in my first trimester and was worried about minimal weight gain most of the second. Fast forward to third trimester and I am at the top of the range for healthy weight gain at this point in the pregnancy. Your body knows what it's doing and weight gain in pregnancy often seems to have nothing to do with the number of calories you consume.

OP, I am just about your exact build. I started off at 124 and lost 2-3 pounds during the first trimester. I was not sick either. I gained those couple of pounds back by the end of the first tri, so I was right back where I started. I am now 19 weeks and am up to 127. (These are all based on measuring myself naked first thing in the morning. I weigh more at night, but I'm using a consistent time in order to track progress.) In the last two weeks I just barely started to show and that seems to have coincided with the weight gain, so I bet you will see some weight gain in the next couple of weeks as well. My doctor has not seemed concerned. I'll see what he says at my appt next week, but I am not worried. I'm sure you're fine!

I gained a pound the first trimester and not much for a few weeks after that. I definitely made up for it in the third trimester. Address your concerns with your doctor on the next visit, but he/she might not see a problem. Is it possible that you started eating more healthily after you found out you were pregnant, so that you would have lost weight if you weren't pregnant? I know that when I stopped drinking alcohol, I lost 2 pounds. A lot of women don't "pop" till month 5 or 6 and you might be one of those lucky ones who doesn't gain weight anywhere but the belly.

I'm so surprised that some women don't pop or gain weight until month 5 or 6! I guess we're just all different! I'm 18 weeks, first pregnancy- started off around 125 and I'm 5'8. I'm all belly (and boobs) already and have gained at least 10 lbs.

I didnt gain a pain in my first trimester either. Don't worry about it until the doc says to worry.
