Oakland Real Estate - Prices Crime and Future

So we bought a tiny home in Oakland during the crazy 2021, bidding war to a $1.2m 100 year house near Lake Merrit.

Zillow says it’s decreased to $1.1M — and with our growing family, the rising crime and need for a bigger house is causing us to look at Walnut Creek and Pleasanton and other CC county suburbs. We also would like good public schools.

First question, is this exodus to the suburbs common for Oakland families — and if so when do most families move, middle school? We would like to not have neighbors constantly moving away.

Second, we have lost $100k in value, are things turning around with crime and will rebound in tech help our valuation? We’d ideally move within 2 years, or should we just try to move sooner and take the hit?

Oakland is dead and SF is on its way down. The city by the bay will be run by the homeless — it’s already the most childless city.

Don’t know about Bay Area suburbs. Sure Palo Alto will be amazing place to live, but the exurbs like Dublin, I’m not sure if they’ll be worth the cost and crazy hot summers

Bay Area ALWAYS rebounds. Oakland will be humming in 5 years or less.

Exodus is very common. We were in Lamorinda and it is filled Oakland refugees. Most move around middle school but definitely by HS. The earlier the better if heading to Lamorinda as the schools are very cliquish and the moms choose the kids’ friends in early elementary school.

I think the whole area has dipped a little in prices. What you lose in Oakland, you may save wherever you move, so it may be a wash.
