buying your way into desirable public schools?

I learned that in order to transfer into a desirable public school district near me, you have to donate a large sum to its foundation. Has anyone heard of this practice? Sounds like bribery.

I've never heard this - the "buying your way in" tends to be paying the much higher mortgage in that neighborhood...

Uh no what? I live in the LA Metro area, my DD is a teacher in Malibu (public). I have never heard of such a thing. Whoever told you this was either pulling your leg, or you misunderstood what they were saying.

"Buying your way" means paying for a much more expensive house in the best school districts.

Which is what EVERYONE does, to the degree they can afford to.
