Is unseasonably warm weather chilling to you? (No pun intended.)

Anonymous
I'm visiting family in Chicago right now and the fact that it's almost 60 degrees here, in the middle of December, is just bone chilling to me. Like, freaky and gives me a pit in my stomach about climate change and the earth's future. I don't think it's entirely rational, but something about it is just extremely unsettling. Do you ever feel this way?

No.

Ha- I came to answer this before I opened it and saw the Chicago reference.

I'm a lifelong Chicagoan and we haven't had a good snow in probably 4 years. I grew up with massive amounts of snow every winter. My kids are 3 and 5 and don't even equate winter with playing in the snow; just with damp cold. My DH and I talk about it all the time.

Also adding that the park behind our house used to make a free ice skating ring every year for 25+ years. The last 5 years they have tried each year, but never got it to work because they didn't have enough consecutive days with freezing temps to get it going. At the village meetings, they said they aren't even going to attempt it this year and will reevaluate next year.

As a once in a blue moon occurrence no, a the frequency we now see it, yes.

Like 15 years ago, a random 70 degree day in January was just a treat. Now that we regularly see temps in the 60s and 70s, even in places like Chicago or Minnesota, in mid-winter, is obviously upsetting.

It scares me but also am I a terrible person for enjoying it?

It has unsettled me for years And it amazes me how many people it does not seem to unsettle.

+1

So many people cheer it and it’s such a terrible sign of what’s happening.

No. I'm 62 and saw it all the time growing up in New England. We'd have unseasonably warm days every winter and lived for them!

I’m 52, grew up in New England, and don’t remember any days like that until the 90s. You’re either a troll or a climate denier.

As for OP’s question, yes, it freaks me out all the time. It’s going to be mid-50s in NYC this week. Not normal at all!!!

Weather isn't climate. It's normal to have some unreasonable weather, and you note that your feelings arent rational. The symptoms you describe seem similar to anxiety.

I try to not let it get to me. We know it's happening. There is little we can do to change the rate of change. There will still be cold and snow in places we've known to be winty, just less of it. At least in our lifetimes.

I may be getting this slightly wrong but it's predicted that in 2100 the Adirondacks will have a climate like DC or Atlanta or somewhere in that range. Significant? Sure.

But there will still be forests and lakes and waterfalls and wetlands in the Adirondacks. And lots of wildlife. For a very long time.

Yes. I live in the Pacific Northwest. It’s quite temperate here and our seasons can be subtle, which makes big changes more unsettling. The bulbs started coming up on my DD’s last day of school before winter break. Other plants are blooming now that are usually dormant from October-February. A lot of skiing hasn’t opened yet, which is abnormal even for an El Niño year, but what’s more alarming is that we went snowshoeing today and trees were budding.

None of that would be truly scary except that my 8 year old asked how we will know which things are weather or climate change and answered her own question by saying that by the time we know it won’t matter. Yikes.

Yes. You’re not alone in that feeling.
