For helping our 18 year old to build a credit score is it better to add them as an authorized user on my cc or have them get their own card? |
I am pretty sure adding them to your account will do absolutely nothing to build their credit score. It is still your account, not theirs, and you are responsible for making payments. |
Did you Google? According to Experian, "As an authorized user, the credit card account is reflected on your credit report, which can help you make progress toward building a robust credit history."

It helps but their own account will help more. We did both with DD who turned 18 in August. |
Op here and thank you for the information. |
My 14yo and 17yo have been authorized users on our credit card for a couple years now. |
My google has told me the opposite. |
I posted on a different thread. I added my son as an authorized user on my card when he was 16 or 17. He’s 18 now with a credit score just under 800. The only ding on his score is the length of credit history. My older son got the best rate available for a car loan when he was 21 or so. |

Should have done it long ago. Do it now, makes sure you have a great score and then get him his own card at some point.

SAH mom here on dual credit cards with husband. It’s not building any credit for me at all. |
Sweet Jesus, people. No one uses Google anymore. Bing with AI is far superior search engine. |
Thanks for the laugh. Bing still sucks. |
Same. Our credit card company states that they don’t report on authorized users. |
If true, I am adding my dog. |
