Downtown LA

Anonymous
On my last few visits to LA, I've gone downtown (Broad museum, Grand Central Market, Arts District, etc.) While I would not want to be walking alone at night, it felt safe and looks like it is improving.

That being said, I'm considering a move to SoCal and there are some really cool loft buildings in DTLA. Anyone have experience living downtown? Recommend? Not? Thoughts? Thanks.

I live nearby. I wouldn't walk around on my own at night in an area without places open - restaurants etc. If its just day time stores and auto parts places, you don't want to be "walking around"

If you are planning on buying a loft you should know the street it's on and the area it's in really well. You can always take a short term rental nearby while you figure this all out.

You couldn’t pay me. I live in LA. I hate downtown. The lofts had their heyday (early to mid 2000s), but due to a variety of factors downtown has spiraled. It’s not safe. There are a bunch of good restaurants so a lot of people go there for the dining scene, museums etc. otherwise avoid.

Which area do you live in PP?

Another LA resident here - I spend a lot of time in DTLA at various restaurants etc. but I wouldn't live down there. I have a friend who owns a loft from the aforementioned heyday and while it has increased a lot in value, who cares when all you can do is to pull in and out of your secured underground garage to drive anywhere because you can't walk?

I'm PP - OP, don't do DTLA. If you can tell us what your vibe is there are a lot of other areas to recommend (and you can still spend time downtown... but then drive home).
