Avalon in Silver Spring

I don't see any information about this school on the forum. Are there any parents who can speak to size, culture, what they like about the school? TIA!

Go look at it. I was not impressed with the academics and its very religious and not welcoming to outsiders.

Ive heard good things about it. Not as “toney” as some other schools but I hear the academics are good! It’s in its baby stages and eventually their campus will improve.

Did you go to the open house today? I was curious to compare/contrast it to our tour of the Heights but I didn’t have time to make it up there.

Avalons headmaster was once headmaster at the heights. Admissions grew exponentially with him at the helm and he had a hand in making the heights what it is today. Definitely in its infancy. It’s not flashy in anyway but very attractive esp if you value liberal arts. It’s also Catholic but not opus affiliated. It will be just as good as the heights as it evolves and grows, you wait and see.

DD went to Brookewood (the sister school) for ES so we had a lot of contact with Avalon boys. Ultimately, I’d say that they understand boys, but I didn’t send DS there.

I doubt that. We looked at it a few years ago and the headmaster was not very kind to us and seemed like a bully. The academics seemed subpar to mcps and mcps academics aren’t great. The teacher seemed good but they were way behind academically in the grade we looked at. It looks good for Catholics or Christian only and kids who are average academics.

Their school profile goes into detail about academics. For the class of 2023, average SAT of 1210 and lackluster college admissions.

I wouldn't choose it if you want a lot of course options and rigor and for your kid to continue to a highly selective college.

I have never seen a school of any level willing to post all that data on its website. That is absolutely to their credit.

The kids I know who go there a good kids but average students and the school works for them but you need to be Catholic or at least Christian.

There are non-Christian students there.

I work in public school and teach a kid that attended Avalon last year. No idea if he left on his own or if he was counseled our, but he’s had a lot of trouble keeping his hands to himself and being too rough with other kids at recess and in the hallways. I’m also shocked at his executive function deficits and vocabulary given he came from a Catholic school. He often yells obscenities in the halls. But his Dad tries to manipulate the system and play like the teachers are to blame.

I cannot imagine that many.
