S/O: speaking of Kohl's... What is that smell at Kohl's, Walmart, Macy's?

Anonymous
There's a distinct smell, and I tend to feel ill after a few minutes, so I no longer set foot in these stores. Is it the smell of whatever chemical is fumigated in their storage or holding facilities? The smell of cheap clothing dyes? The Walmart clothing section and Macy's are the worst.

I don't smell this at similar bargain shopping places, like Nordstrom Rack.

But I would think that other "fast fashion" type places like GAP, Ann Taylor, Target, etc. would smell that way too. Any places that has relatively cheap clothing.

Department store smells bother me, especially the fragrance and cosmetics sections.
But that wouldn't account for your aversion to Walmart.

The chemicals sprayed on clothes to keep them looking fresh are pretty nasty. If I wear something new without washing it, even sometimes just trying a tight item on without clothes underneath, I develop an itchy rash. That's happened with clothes from multiple places, even Costco leggings. Now that you mention it, discount places like Nordstrom rack and Saks on fifth and Marshalls don't bother me as much. Maybe their clothes have been out of the factory long enough for some of the worst chemicals to become diluted? Whereas other retailers, including Walmart, might get a shipment of tightly packed items direct from China and put the items right out on the shelves.

Plastic off gassing, or something similar. Really hit me after going back to in person shopping.

At Target, you’re smelling floor wax and carpet cleaner.

I like the smell; reminds me of back to school shopping. Although back then real leather was one of the smells too.

As opposed to other, expensive clothing dyes that smell like what? peonies on a fresh spring morning? You are ridiculous.

Your "poors" bashing thread is also ridiculous. Check your privilege and be glad you have options.
