Child with Learners Permit on Car Insurance?

Anonymous
My daughter got learners permit a few weeks ago. Just got email from progressive I should add her to policy.

Is this a new thing?

State Farm said our is covered under the adult driver until the kid has a license and can drive alone.

We added our teen to our policy when he got their learners permit and it did not affect our rates. I'm stalling on getting the full license because that will jack our rate.

Same experience. My carrier did call me periodically after my kids became eligible to test and reminded me of my obligation to notify them as soon as they got their licenses.

You do not have to add them until they get their actual license

USAA told us the same. They can’t add him until he has a drivers license.

Insurance policies typically cover liability incurred by anyone operating your vehicle with your consent.

I wonder if this is a state-by-state thing. In VA, our insurer said we can't add with a permit, just a license.

Progressive in MD said if I don’t add kid with Learners permit may not be covered in accident,

Not a VA thing. When my kid got her learner's we called GEICO and they added her. They don't charge anything for her until she gets her license, but they added her.

That is what my SF agent told me as well. He said I didn't need to add her or notify them.

Anyone have progressive in Maryland? How much did the rates increase for a permit driver??

I have progressive my 17 year old is added with learners permit. Your rate does not go up. If not added they may not pay in a crash. They are very clear on this.
