Carpet Remnants from Home Depot, etc

Anonymous
I need a large rug to put in my bedroom and don't really want to spend hundreds of dollars on one. We're also renters so I'd rather get something a little less permanent in case our next place doesn't have the same size space. I was thinking about going to Home Depot or Lowes and getting a carpet remnant and having the edges finished. I also like the idea of something a bit more plush since I have a baby who will be crawling around on it. Just wondering if anyone has done this and if so, what was the cost? I'd want something 8x12 at least.

Thanks!

I just went through something similar, although did not go to Home Depot. We wanted to buy a 100& wool rug. We went to a carpet wholesaler, and checked out wool carpet remnants, but it was comparatively more expensive to get it cut, bordered, etc. there b/c you pay separately for having it bordered. It ended up being cheaper to buy a 100% wool rug on sale at the Great Indoors. At the carpet wholesaler, the equivalent product was over 500; at the Great Indoors, we got a clearance rug for around 300.

I got a large remnant -- about 18 by 12 I think, maybe 18 by 14, for our play room down in the basement -- for $125. I did not have it bound because it was meant to be trashed (little spilly kids with ink and paint and whatnot). I just got it at a regular carpet store. It's held up really well, to the point I almost wished I had it bound.

go to a carpet store, where it actually is a remnant and is cheaper - at home depot, they usually sell pre-bound small rugs instead of actual remnants.

you might want to check out overstock.com. i got a great rug from there that was very inexpensive- comparatively.

Just got one at Carpet Palace in Rockville. It was 12x12, cost about $600 with binding.

Go to Homegoods. They have plenty of rugs that are affordable.

We got a huge (20x20) with the edges done at a carpet store for $500, including the padding. The padding has made a HUGE difference. The carpet is very good quality. We were able to bargain with them b/c it was an independent dealer. They had loads of stuff that was cheaper.

I second both HomeGoods and Overstock as a cheap rug resource. I priced something similar myself, and binding made the remnants pricey. Also Lowes refused to do it at all, but I could have just gotten a bad salesperson.
