Extreme Thirst at 6 weeks

Anonymous
I'm 6 weeks and I am so unbelievably thirsty. no matter how much i drink i still feel thirsty. is this common? i don't remember it from my first pregnancy and it's not in my books as a pregnancy symptom. I'm going to ask my doctor next week but i'm curious if a lot of people experience this early on in pregnancy.

Yes! I would wake up several times during the night because I was so thirsty. And I was drinking a lot of water every day, at least as much (and usually more) than the books recommend. I found that if I drank as much as I could, the earlier in the day, the nighttime thirst would be better. I just couldn't believe how much water I was drinking. I'm 6 months pregnant now and still very thirsty (though not quite as much as I was, at least during the night, as earlier). I asked my dr about it at about 12 weeks, and her only comment was, "Is there a history of diabetes in your family?" Which kind of worried me, but there's not that history in my family. At 20 weeks, I was tested for gestational diabetes, and I don't have it.

I think I just required more water than what some preg. ladies do, for whatever reason.

Me too! I am only a little over 5 weeks pregnant w/my second and cannot get enough water. I don't remember this from my first pregnancy at all. However, I was also really sick w/ms, boobs were crazy sore, I was tired to the point of taking 2 naps a day.....this time I don't have half the symptons. Really hoping the ms doesn't kick in.......fingers crossed.

Yes ladies, me too. Your body needs a ton of fluid to create a healthy and safe environment for your growing baby. The amniotic fluid, hormone regulation, etc. will start to fill in.

Don't worry, you'll leave the hospital looking 5 months pregnant because all that fluid you've been carrying around for 9 months will slowly leave your body - peeing and sweating...not to mention the hormones.

The body does some wacky things to maintain a growing baby not to mention itself. Quite amazing if you think about it.

Keep drinking that water! My OB told me that drinking lots of water keep the stretch marks at bay. Certainly worked for me - ended up with some but only at the end of the pregnancy and all basically gone now (a year later). Congratulations and drink up!
