My dd has requested help with writing her essay. Thank you. |
And do you thing this essay writing business or service improves your kids’ writing? |
We haven’t done it, yet, but have heard good things about Writopia (in-person and online classes). |
My kid's high school PTSA had a speaker from one of those companies come in. She explained what she did at each of her pricey sessions. I just did that myself. It was helpful, and free. |
What’s it called? |

My son did this based largely on positive recommendations from DCUM. We would not recommend. Waste of time and money. |
My two kids liked the Writopia online college essay workshop. One did it this summer and hasn't applied to college yet. The other did it 2 years ago and did well with her college applications. They both thought they received good instruction and feedback, and they both came out of the workshop with a finished essay. |
My son had a good experience with Writopia too, a 1-week online workshop. His common app essay was nearly done by the end and he learned some brainstorming techniques that I know he used on his supplements. For the person who had a bad experience, I would guess this is something that can be highly dependent on the individual instructor and I'm sorry to hear that they are inconsistent. |
Do not overspend. The College Essay Guy is helpful. Ask around and you may find some people in your area who do this on a freelance basis. Also, see how much oversight they get at school. My kid's public does NOTHING, but our neighbor who goes to private school gets a very careful read from the head of the English department. |
+1 I have a friend who is a journalist who also has a side gig helping kids with college essays so she's working with DD at a very favorable "friends and family" rate. She also got a start on a draft in her 11th grade English class but I know not all the English teachers at her school do that. |
Agree with this. Writopia was a waste of money and time. There was very little correction and editing of their work. Little to no feedback to the students. |
Nobody can write their essay for them. |
No shit Sherlock. Most of these are writing programs. For others they help with the process and the editing. At DC’s private, a good part of English class for the first 4 weeks focuses on college essay. Many drafts, comments, rewrites. No one writes it for them. Others do review, comment, and suggest edits. |
To the person who said nobody can write their essay for them, no kidding. Courses can help expand one’s skill set through information, education, and training. You can actually learn things at all ages. |
