It is a large public high school and has the good, bad and ugly that goes along with that.
Overall, most families I know with kids there are satisficed.

I good friend teaches there and she loooooooves her school and her students. She frequently posts awesome things the graduates are doing.
They have a specific program for advanced/college bound kids that sounds great.

You'll hear lots of crap about PGCPS, and most of it is probably deserved, but from what I hear from my friend there's also a lot of awesome stuff happening in Bowie HS

I live in Bowie and lots of people in my neighborhood have kids that go there and love it. Its definitely one of the better high schools in the area, but like any school that is all about how much the parents put into it. (Staying on top of their kids' studies, providing stable homes with rules, cooperating with teachers, active participation in the PTA, etc.) and Bowie generally has all that.

I live in Beltsville but have family friends who send their children to Bowie HS. I’d recommend it — strong programs, preponderance of students from all income levels who seem to intermingle, the whole deal. Strong community feel and they tend to really support their programs. For PGCPS, you always want to get schools/clusters in the North and East side of the county, not quite the West part that’s “inside the Beltway” or the South part. Roosevelt is obviously the top choice if your kids can get in, but Bowie/DuVal/Wise are in that next tier. Off topic but hope this helps.

They are short on teachers. Last school year they were short 4 English teachers. I definitely won't badmouth PG schools overall - just saying they are feeling the same pain all schools are facing.
