No point unless you also want to communicate with relatives. There are millions of Chinese who speak English just fine. Why bother being a white American speaking poor Chinese. Let alone the years it would take to read a newspaper or write in characters. Just do a business speaking course and learn about the culture - will help you more 10,000+ flashcards and tapes. |
That's been my personal experience as well. Trying goes a long way with the French, for they appreciate the effort. |
You obviously don't know Wall Street at all. |
I have a kid who attends a Mandarin immersion school. He is currently in elementary school but when he is in high school, he will intern at a billion+ hedge fund. We are good friends with the founder.
Our kid shows excellent math ability and the Mandarin will be an asset. We will encourage him to take Latin and French too in middle school. |
Bless your heart, already lining up ths hedge fund internship for your 3 yr old! I think you just won DCUM. |

No. He is 7 yrs old and we had lined up the internship before he was born ![]() |
China is a world power.
French is pretty useless now, but Spanish will continue to be help, since a significant minority in this country speak it. Russian and Arabic are also good to learn. |
About as much as I remember pre-calc, physics or biology. Why bother going to school at all? |
But it doesn't have to be an either/or. My child is at an immersion school so language isn't an extra- they still spend just as much time in Math, Science, Social Studies, etc, just half of that time it is taught in a different language. |

Don't know about you - I remember quite a bit, and still occasionally tap into the foreign language, pre-calc, physics and other stuff that I learned... |
China's not a world power. Give me a break. |
Keep telling yourself that, idiot. They own us... Or at least our debt. http://www.dailyfinance.com/2012/07/16/10-ways-america-is-losing-its-superpower-status-to-china/#!slide=979913 |
Actually it isn't; see earlier comments. |
