I was so exasperated. I ran off with my cart and found another register.

To me, this is typical of the rudeness I see in this area. Just nasty and unnecessary rudeness.

How should I have handled this? Is it so long to get out of line for a minute if you have forgotten an item.

I wanted to dump a container of Cool Whip on this slob's head.

With grace, OP, as you did. People are rude. You don't have to be rude in response to them, it will only hurt you. You did great.
