This isn’t me, but I wouldn’t judge someone who has to spend an hour+ sitting in DC traffic everyday for wanting to spend that time in a comfortable ride that they love.

But are the $$$ cars really more comfortable? Maybe they just love showing off for an hour in traffic?

Yes they are so much more comfortable.
Now to others who drive older cars. A new car, even a basic one, is typically so much more comfortable than a 10 year old car.
If you are driving a 15 year old car until the wheels fall off because you are trying to save money, it’s fine. Making sacrifices isn’t a bad thing. But claiming that you see no difference in comfort and ride quality compared to a new car is a total lie.

I buy a new car every 8 years.

I agree.

I had to rent a car on a business trip and got an Audi. It was so awesome. My Honda is very reliable, but it's not as fun and comfortable to drive as their Audi. I didn't get why a friend loved her Audi and now her BMW. I get it now.

I'm surprised at how many of y'all are reporting just one car. Are you single? Or part of a couple and have just one car?

We both mainly work from home (and when I have to go in I'm 2 miles away), so when our 2nd car bit the dust, we just didn't buy a new one.

1.4M HHI (one earner)
Earner drives 2014 MDX with 150K miles
I drive a 2023 MDX

Earner has every intention of driving that car for at least another 50K miles.

Meh. I drove a 2006 and a 2013 of the same make and model when the 2013 was only 1-2 years old. Granted that is only a 7 year difference but I didn't notice a difference in comfort.

Cars changed a lot from 2013 -2023.

Earned income $20k earned. Maybe even $10k this year as I don't feel like working much and prefer to play dead. Total income and NW much higher.
I drive HR-V. I drive only 3000 miles a year so I really don't care what I drive. Got to have stronger rims and tires as I tend to break them.
I may change it for a new car, but I just can't get myself to dealership and deal with all this buying stuff. Cars just don't excite me other than convenience.

$250k- 2023 Chevy bolt and 2020 Subaru Outback. We traded a 2011 Outback in for the 2020 on in 2022. Then we realized we needed to make the jump to a two car family.

Those McLean streets are ROUGH. Real ones know what it's like out there.

I’ve thought about upgrading to a bmw or Mercedes but I’m just not seeing the difference. I can tell they’re heavier and nicer. But I don’t drive that much and I don’t care enough I guess. If I had to commute daily I’d consider it for sure. People who have to commute daily can buy whatever car helps them.
