Home Alone Classes?

Anonymous
Has anyone heard of anything like a "Home Alone" class to prepare a child ages 8 to 12 or so for being home alone? Something like a Babysitter Safety Class for older kids?

I know there are things I should teach my child myself of course, but I would find it easier if someone else did some of the presentation. Just wondered if there were such a course.

The red cross and local hospitals usually do these.

Really? If it works for you, go for it, but it would never have crossed my mind that this was such a big deal it needed a class.

Wouldn't have crossed my mind either, but now that I know about it, I think it sounds like a great idea and will look into it for my 8-year-old.

17:28 again -

Please tell me. I'm intrigued. What do they teach?

We leave my son home regularly - in fact, some days he comes home to an empty house. He is ten. He knows how to operate the phones. He knows how to operate the locks. He knows how to open the fridge and fix a bowl of cereal. He knows our rules and follows them. He knows what to do if he hears a smoke alarm or smells gas. He knows how to ask neighbors for help. What more is there?

Doesn't sound like your child needs a "Home Alone" class. Yay, you!
