moving every thirty minutes at your desk job?

Anonymous
In light of recent findings about the perils of sitting too much and those perils NOT being offset by exercise (see article link below) I am wondering how many people here, or people you know or see at the workplace actually have a way of getting up every 30 minutes to break the sitting streak.

I work from him and am moving constantly, but my husband sits at his IT desk job all day long. He claims he gets up to go to the bathroom but of course not eveyr 30 minutes. Unhelpfully, there does not seem to be a clear guideline yet as to how much moving around every 30 minutes would be enough. One or two minutes?

In addition to it potentially being intrusive to concentration, there is the discipline issue involved, the reminder system to enforce said discipline, and the willingness to be That Guy That Gets Up Every 30 Minutes Because His New Wife Is Worried About Losing Him.

Obviously as we learn more about the health risks of sitting too much, there will have to be a concomitant change in workplace culture if we want to broadly assist people in delaying an early death. I do have a friend at State Department who has a co-worker who has a standing cycling or pedaling desk. Not sure what she had to do to get that; could be an accommodation for her based on some health risks, but she appears very fit and healthy. Arguably, wanting to delay early death should not fall into anything requiring a special accommodation. (sigh)

Standing desk is a good compromise, but really it's not your place to micromanage your dh at work.

OP again. LOL I just saw I wrote "he claims to get up to go to the bathroom". What I mean is, he claims that therefore he doesn't technically sit all day.

He does in fact get up to go the bathroom. But yeah, not enough to count for the every 30 minutes "rule." Which of course is just a tentative guideline based on the data.

New Wife, take advice from Old Wife: Let this go. Share the information with him, in a "I read this and was really surprised!" way, and then let it go.

OP here, for Gods sake. Concern is not micromanaging. I have had one conversation with him about it a few months ago. This is not about that. I am asking if anyone here does it.

And if you read the article, you will find the data does NOT support the idea of a standing desk solving the problem.

And not that it matters to you, but my DH almost died of blood clots a few years ago.

OP here: Look ladies. My DH is just one example. This is not about him or me.

I asked if anyone DOES THIS 30 MINUTE THING.

Micromanaging is using terms like "reminder system," "discipline," "claims," and making allusions to the fact that you brought it up with him, he said he does move, and you don't think it's enough.

Your concern is coming off as VERY micromanaging in your writing. If that's not true, great. But chances are it will come off that way to your husband as well.

Im guessing its not common.

How is this not about your DH?

the willingness to be That Guy That Gets Up Every 30 Minutes Because His New Wife Is Worried About Losing Him.

The newer Fitbits and Apple watch buzz you if you've been sitting too long.

I think this is a factually correct statement. I hope anyway...

I go for a walk around the floor of my building approximately every hour to clear my head.

There is no evidence that a standing desk is healthier, although it probably is. Getting up and doing a couple of squats or burpies every half hour is probably best, if weirder.

I don't bring a large bottle of water with me. I get up every 30 min to go to the office kitchen to fill that small paper cup to drink water.
I go to make a cup of tea (2-3 times a day) coffee (1-2 times a day)
I get up to grab my breakfast/lunch from the office fridge
Every two hours I get out from the building and walk around the block (5-10 min) in any weather.
Sometimes I go to the middle of the day gym class.

PP: I forgot to add a restroom breaks. So, generally everything adds up to sitting no longer than 30 min.
