drinking a beer while breastfeeding

Anonymous
The other day I was at the NATS game, and saw this women drinking a slip of beer... She had a 6 week old baby, and then I saw her breakfast feeding..... Why are people doing this now?

MYOB (in this case mind your own beer). This is okay. The amount that gets transmitted is minuscule from a couple sips of beer, and it's not instant.

This was advised to women at least as recently as 1986. If you’re not a troll, and have a grasp of middle school level biology, you’ll realize that a beer consumed while nursing will not impact in any way the child nursing, since the alcohol would not have time to reach the milk the baby is consuming which has already been produced. But if you’re a troll who hates women that won’t matter to you.

It is NOT RECOMMENDED, and socially, it's never a good look.

You're never sure that the parent in question pumps and dumps, or waits the suggested 2 hours after nursing again. Different bodies process alcohol differently, and there are various levels of tolerance to alcohol in the human species. Some individuals (it generally runs in families) lack some of the enzymes to metabolize alcohol, in which case any amount of alcohol can be dangerous.

Just as more research on alcohol consumption has lowered the threshhold of recommended amounts over the years, so will recommendations while brestfeeding change as well.

Best never to drink while pregnant or nursing. A "duh" thing, of course.

Is smoking a joint while breastfeeding okay?

It’s not a good look, looks trashy but it’s not bad for the baby.

She should be whipped in the public square immediately and the baby put up for adoption and on much healthier formula.

Didn’t they used to recommend stout for nursing women?

The most dangerous time for a mother to be consuming alcohol is while pregnant, especially earlier in pregnancy when you probably wouldn't know she is pregnant, and the only proven harm is from lots of drinking, not one beer.*
*I don't think it's worth the risk drinking at all during pregnancy.

The biggest danger from a nursing mother drinking is if she gets really drunk and drops her baby. The alcohol the baby gets from breast milk is negligible (similar to the amount in fruit juice). And the BEST time to drink alcohol is WHILE physically nursing the baby because then your body can process the alcohol before the next nursing session.

All this to say is MYOB because what you are describing does not seem very harmful to the baby at all.

When I was breast feeding many years ago beer was recommended as a way to increase supply. Really. And maybe it even works.

If it's not bad for the baby, why does it look trashy?

I was literally taught this in a breastfeeding class at Breastfeeding Center. She said if you're worried about nursing and drinking, nursing WHILE having your drink is the best time for this exact reason. MYOB in any case, OP, but especially since you're ignorant.

I would not say anything unless she was also smoking a cigar and balancing an ashtray on top of the baby's head.
