Eyebrows

I am naturally very fair skinned and my hair is a medium blonde. My eyebrows however have always been non existent. They are basically transparent and you can’t see them unless you are right up close.

I am not a make up wearer or beauty treatment person and it never really bothered me. My face was attractive enough and I always felt I looked really odd with any colour in them as it just wasn’t my face.

However now I am 50, have some wrinkles and my skin is losing elasticity and just looks very bland. I thought we’ll maybe now is the time to do something with my eye brows to give my face a little more features but I was looking at my eyebrows closely in the mirror and they actually sit just on the edge of my brow bone and are partly in the skin under my brow bone / in my upper eyelid.

This seems abnormally low! I don’t think I could have them coloured as they aren’t high enough. When I look at other people’s eyebrows they are much higher than mine. It’s like my forehead skin has stretched and my eyebrows are now way too low.

Any help anyone has would be great. Is this normal with aging? Is there any thing I can do to give myself more facial features? My face is small and I have a small mouth and small eyes and with everything being so fair and colorless, I am just disappearing! I am not sure what feature to try to enhance.

Do you wear mascara? Blush? I’d start there.

Would you consider botox for a temporary broj lift?

Eyebrow tint will make everything look better.

At first it will be very surprising to you, but yes, it sounds like you need some color on your face.

OP, I have your exact same coloring, down to the transparent eyebrows. And yes, as I hit my 40s and started to fade a bit, I started to struggle with my features just all seeming too small and nondescript.

I use a blonde eyebrow tint (Boybrow or something similar). The lightest color available. When I put it on, if I don't have any other makeup on, it looks insane to me. Like I'm wearing stage makeup. But if I then put on some mascara and a little blush and a little color on my lips, it all balances out and I look like myself, with just more defined features. It really only takes a little.

Also -- do you color or bleach your hair? I have gone through phases where I've tried to just let the grays come in (there aren't that many of them) but I feel like it contributes to this kind of colorlessness of my appearance. I color my hair with a dark blonde demi-permanent dye (essentially my natural color) and it helps give my hair a bit more depth of color. It doesn't even fully cover the grays, and it fades because it's demi-perm (so no harsh line), but it just creates some depth so that my hair, skin, and features don't all just blend together.

I think this is just how a lot of blondes age -- you just fade. But even blondes who go gray benefit a ton from a bit of makeup to put some color on their cheeks and define their eyes. I know she's a lot older than we are, but look at Helen Mirren's makeup. She is tinting her rows, wearing mascara and eyeliner, and always has color on her cheeks and lips. It doesn't look harsh or unnatural, it enhances her beauty. Without it, even she would look very washed out.

This is why brow lifts are so common. Gravity = everything on our faces go south eventually.

OP here. Thanks all. My eyelashes are also quite fair so while I do wear mascara sometimes, it feels so dark against my very pale skin. I think eyebrow tint would be the same but I am not even sure I could wear eyebrow tint now given how low my eyebrows are sitting.

Maybe I need to do a makeup consult. My skin has a lot of pink and red tones in it and I just find that make-up doesn't really blend in or look good but I also really know nothing about make-up.

I haven't gone grey. I do have some age related white / transparent hair but it is evenly distributed throughout my head so it has actually made my hair look blonder - like I have highlights. I have highlighted my hair at various times throughout my life but now it looks pretty good naturally with the blonde and natural lighter highlights.

My face is just completely washed out and getting more of a redder tone as I age. I have blue eyes but they don't really stand out anymore, I think they have gotten darker and less blue over the years. My lips don't have a lot of colour and I have no color in my eyebrows and very little in my lashes and my hair is light - so its kind of a blank slate!

Yes, that lightening/blondening from the white hair is contributing to the washed out look. You definitely need a makeup consult. I think you will be shocked by what a quick 5 minute routine, including a tinted moisturizer or sunscreen to even out those red spots AND an eyebrow tint will do to open up your face.

I'd start there before the eyebrow lift at least!

I used Make up Forever green corrector base. It helps even out the red. Eyebrow pencil and a relatively bright but sheer lipstick are my most important make up items.

I have a similar complexion and eyebrow and eyelash tinting makes a HUGE difference in my appearance. I would recommend going to someone who specializes in shaping and tinting brows and they will find out what’s best for your face. I promise your tinted brows will look better than blonde brows regardless of the sagging you’ve noticed.

I'm not a blonde, but I do suffer from redness and I feel like my eyes aren't noticable anymore. For the first issue, I have been using a green tinted moisturizer and feel like there is a difference. I don't remember the name, but it's from Avene. I remember watching a Bobbi Brown video and she was touting this golden hues product to help balance the redness. I wasn't a huge fan of that product, but I find that using my bronzing powder actually does help my skin look more balanced. I love the Gucci one in the light shade. I'm not an expensive makeup kind of person, but this powder is now a must for me.

For the eyes, the difference with and without mascara is significant. I look so much more vibrant and younger with mascara. The tips of my lashes are lighter, so it makes a big difference even though I'm a brunette. Also, a little color and control on the eyebrows make a big difference. I saw a rec for boy brow and I love that stuff. I don't know how the lighter colors are, but I use medium brown and it make a big difference.

I never wear blush or highlighter and almost never wear color on my lips. Mascara and bronzer, though, are always at the top of my makeup bag.

You could just lightly brush on some eye shadow, Clairol powder hair color for root touch ups, to see what it might look like, before going through the trouble of tinting.
